Friday 21 June – Longest day – bike and boat trip – Sunny periods
Did exercises on the beach which is only just opposite the house :) Not a
brilliant weather day but not raining! Had a shower and breakfast then
packed lunch ready for our bike ride – we are borrowing Peter and
Sally’s bikes to have a whiz round the island. Just as we were about to
leave Peter and Sally texted to say that it looked good for a trip out on
their inflatable boat. We biked down to the little harbour to meet them
and got our wet trousers on then set off out to sea. We whizzed across to
the Gunnar sound and just as we got into the flat water between two small
islands we saw our first fin!! Basking sharks!!!! We were so thrilled
because we hoped to see them last time we were here but were unlucky. They
are huge and the fin on their back and their tail comes right out of the
water as they swim past. One came so close that although it wasn’t sunny
we could still see it clearly under the water and make out its nose and
huge mouth. Amazing. We had our lunch watching the gannets diving for
fish – throwing themselves very violently into the sea. Cormorants,
shags, and guillemots were flying past all the time. When the fins
disappeared we moved along a little and saw another huge shark. We decided
it was getting a bit chilly and choppy so we headed back towards the
harbour. We saw another shark and slowed down to get a better view then
went all the rest of the way back slowly because it was rough and Mag was
getting soaked! Back on dry land we sat with Peter and Sally in the sun,
which had finally appeared! Then they left to go home and we carried on
with our bike ride around the coast. The roads are single track with
passing places so we had been warned that cycling was a bit scary! Luckily
we didn’t encounter too much traffic and really enjoyed our trip. The
beautiful Crossapoll beach was on our route and the beach, rocks and clear
water, which is such a stunning colour, make you think you are in the
Caribbean! We called in at the shop to pick up Peter and Sally’s paper.
(Newspapers are brought in on a light aircraft from Oban every day). We
treated ourselves to a cake and ate it sitting on the dunes above Crossapol
beach. After that we cut across the island on the road which passes the
airport back to Peter and Sally’s and the van. We spent the rest of the
afternoon and evening in the van, reading, dozing and having a Tesco
cottage pie and green beans for tea :) The next door neighbour was
schooling a pony in his back garden and we could hear corncrakes making
their very weird sound in the field behind the house. We were planning to
walk on the beach across the road in a little while but it has started to
rain :(
